state of the me
Mar. 5th, 2012 08:59 amWent to DC Big Flea with Mr. Flowersocks yesterday, where I picked up a couple of dresses and a hat for the shop, and a some butterfly prints from a book of natural history for myself. I almost bought a gorgeous 1930s kitchen cabinet, which would have made a fantastic display piece, but someone else bought it while I was trying to figure out if it would fit in my mom's car. Alas. Rounded out the day seeing An American in Paris and grabbed a bite with
ellen_fremedon and
neotoma, which was delightful.
I watched Being Elmo the other night, which offered a lot of tantalizing glimpses of what it was like to work with Jim Henson and be in the Sesame Workshop, but surprisingly little personal stuff about Kevin Clash himself. I mean, his childhood and young adulthood was covered extensively-- mythologized, even-- but one minute he's mentioning the birth of his daughter and the next he's divorced and she's sixteen. I suppose not all of his family members wanted to be part of the documentary?
(Also, I am a terrible person. When Clash talks about his daughter being born, he says it's so much more amazing to create a person than to create a puppet. My immediate reaction was "Nuh-uh! Any asshole can make a person. Not that many people can make memorable puppets!" Am I awful?)
My first week of small businesshood went really well-- I met my sales goals, and if I can keep it up this venture will effectively triple my income. Which is kind of nice, as I don't have that much of an income. Now the trick is to keep it up, which means having new stuff in the shop constantly. Darn, I guess I have to keep going to thrift stores and estate sales all the time. What a hardship. (Actually, what I really need to do is find some tops-- I have a ton of dresses and skirts, but I'm short on blouses and sweaters. But I keep finding cute dresses! What a dilemma.)
