And part 2. Takes us back to how it all began.

Part One
Six Months Earlier

It wasn't a particularly good party. Dawn had been hoping for something at least a little more Animal House-- the flier had said "toga party," and that came with a certain set of assumptions-- people in togas, for a start. But the vast majority were togaless. Only the frat brothers at the door, checking student IDs (apparently to weed out undercover party-busting cops, although Dawn figured it would also keep vamp trouble to a minimum and counted it as a blessing) were toga'd, along with a few of the more clueless freshman guys.

So Dawn Summers' very first college party was turning out to be kind of a drag. The music totally sucked, and someone had spilled beer on her shoe-- her new shoe! Stupid, drunk ... stupidheads.

Dawn flopped down on the couch that looked to have the fewest unidentifiable stains. The guy sitting next to her, gazing morosely into the onion dip, looked like the only person present having less fun than her.

"Hey, Dawnie! I see you've met my buddy here?"
Dawn looked up, and so did Dip Guy. "Carlos?" She hadn't been expecting to see him. "Hey! What are you doing here?"

"Having a good time, what does it look like? Now, you two, on the other hand..."

"Hey, so not my fault. I was expecting something a little less... dank. And sweaty. And beery."

Dip Guy spoke up, finally. "So I guess that means this is you first party?"

Dawn nodded, and pulled a face. "Yeah. I guess it shows, huh?"

Dip Guy smiled. "Maybe a little."

Dawn looked up at Carlos... but he was gone already, weaving unsteadily through the crowd. "Guess Carlos wanted to find the less cranky part of the party." A though occurred to her. "Hey, how do you know him, anyway?"

"We were on the same hall, freshman year. Now, I chaperone him and the rest of the alkie patrol when they want to get stupid-drunk. What about you?"

"Oh, we went to high school together, before I moved to Cleveland."

"Cleveland?" There was deep skepticism in Dip Guy's tone.

"Hey, I'm a California girl at heart, no question. My sister and I moved out there a few years ago, but I decided to come back for school. Oh-- I never introduced myself, did I? I'm Dawn."

He smiled, and offered a hand to shake. "I'm Connor."
