two random things

holliDoes anyone else's brain supply voice actors for comics and other written work they read? I almost always do this, but only rarely is it a specific, outside-my-head voice-- Kevin Conroy, for instance, is always and forever Batman, whatever I'm reading; but usually my brain just composites up something that sounds right.
The thing is, I just now realized that the voice I hear for Natalya, the Russian girl in Y: The Last Man, is the Russian girl from Captain Planet. Which is a little odd, and leads me to wonder why my Yorick voice is not Wheeler, because that would be *kind of awesome*.
The second thing: there's an *excellent* comment thread discussing the likelihood of intelligent extraterrestrial life over at Pharyngula.

Which, of course, makes perfect sense, but as the author makes clear is not terribly useful. For myself, the debate on life beyond Earth is fun, but about as ultimately productive as the debate about life in Fairyland, or for that matter the debate about life after death. The odds are that we won't find out if we're right in our lifetimes, but thinking about it is awfully interesting, and wouldn't it be great if we *did* get answers?

"Although our evidence is obviously very limited, we do know that 100% of all known planets with life went on to develop complex multicellular life within a few billion years, 100% of those went on to develop intelligent life within a few more billion years, and 100% of intelligent lifeforms developed technological civilizations in at most a few *million* years. So saying things like "it's very unlikely" flies in the face of the available evidence, limited though it is. There is of course a risk that Earth is not a representative sample of life-bearing worlds generally, but how can we know that until we observe at least a couple dozen others?"
