stuff what i've been up to
Sep. 4th, 2007 04:02 pmFriday: Saw Jonathan Coulton with roomate, her friends, and
cats_n_crying. Highlight was definitely the impromptu performance of "Sweet Caroline," which was triggered by one of the many stuffed animals thrown at the stage. Lots of them had notes or tip money attached; this particular one had a note asking Jonathan Coulton to play someone's bachelor party in Vegas. There was a whole long list of stuff on offer in exchange, but all I can remember is that it ended in "...and a $149-a-night gambling allowance."
Jonathan Coulton: "You know, you should probably have brought this up by emailing me. At my email address."
Bachelor Party Guy: "Yeah, that's what Neil Diamond said."
And really, the only possible response to that is busting out "Sweet Caroline."
Other highlights: "Code Monkey," "I Crush Everything" followed by the first live performance of "Octopus," doing zombie voices for the chorus of "Re: Your Brains." Really, really fun, all in all.
Saturday: Renn Fest! Second weekend, but my first day, since I couldn't make it last week. I sprung for the season pass-- this year, they're actual plastic cards with your picture on, which is neat. We didn't do a lot, mostly hung around the White Hart a lot and watched the performers. Drake, the skeevy pirate who looks kind of like Gary Oldman, kept making eyes at us while the Pyrates Royale were on. This turns out to be relevant later.
We went to a barbecue afterwards, which meant showing up in costume and changing into regular clothes-- and also stopping at the CVS on the way, in costume, to buy candy for the Batman pinata I found at the thrift store. Awkward! But it was fun, and while we didn't get a chance to hit Batman with sticks, there were illegal fireworks.
When I got home, I convinced Marike to try on my Renn Fest costume. She is way too teeny for my skirts, but overall looked awesome. I maintain that it is really hard to *not* look awesome in clothes that pretty, though.
Sunday was quiet: babysitting. Monday, though! I went to Renn Fest with Shira and a friend of hers, not in costume because it was supposed to be ungodly hot-- and boy, was it; just dusty and sweaty and gross. Which, of course, is why I was serenaded by pirates. See, Drake was making eyes and waving at us again-- or, I guess, at me, and I waved back, because it's flattering when pirates flirt with you even when they're skeevy. So of course I got pulled up on stage for a song! I suspect I was bright red for pretty much the entire thing. Also, pirates have sweaty hands.
