Okay. I think I've mentioned this before, but I <3 the Lucksmiths so bad. If I *haven't* mentioned this before, the Lucksmiths are an Australian band I've adored since high school, and if I haven't thrown mp3s at you already ask me the next time I'm on IM and I will be more than happy to share.
I should mention right now that the lead singer of the Lucksmiths is-- well, okay. Picture Dean Winchester. Now give him an Australian accent, a knee-melting voice, and the ability to drum. Ladies, that funny feeling you've got right now is your underpants catching fire.
I just got home from seeing the Lucksmiths live for the very first time, and oh em gee, you guys. SO AMAZING. SO MUCH. Like, I *love* their albums; their recorded music is super mellow and happy and nice to listen to, but live it becomes apparent that they use that much bass for a reason, and that reason is ROCK AND ROLL. I put my purse down on the ground between my feet after three songs, so I could dance, and I did not pick it up again until the end of the show. At which point my legs were wobbly and my face hurt from smiling so much.
Oh! And! The awesome did not actually start with the Lucksmiths, it started with Still Flying, the first opening band. Let me tell you about Still Flying. Still Flying has at least 14 people in it, but it might be as many as 16-- it was a small stage, and they were pretty packed in. These people include:
a keyboard player
two backup singers
two trumpet players
two saxophone players
a bongo player
a drummer
a guy who didn't actually play anything, just danced around excitedly on stage
a girl in a cute vintage dress who sometimes sang backup and sometimes played various weird percussion intstruments
a bassist
a backup guitarist, I think, it was hard to see
a lead singer/guitarist
a guy in a sweatband who was playing something I couldn't see, possibly more drums
and Glen. Glen has a really thick beard, huge glasses, and a little-boy haircut. Glen was wearing a short-sleeve plaid shirt and the kind of hat yacht captains wear. Glen plays the xylophone and the slide trombone. Glen may be the exact polar opposite of Tali, the Lucksmiths' lead singer, in every possibly way, but-- this is important-- he is just as awesome and I love him just as much.
And their songs are really good and cute! Basically, Still Flying is my sense of whimsy made flesh. And into a band. I am really really happy to know they exist.
But back to Lucksmiths. Oh man. They were just so GOOD, and not even the obnoxious bunch of shouty, flail-y, PDA-y drunks in the front row could harsh the awesome. They played every single song I was hoping to hear, along with a bunch of new stuff that sounds fantastic and I can't wait to possess in album form. A bunch of times, when I realized what song they were starting I got so excited I just started jumping up and down-- not even dancing, just bouncing with glee. AND, the girl with the tattoo "Fiction" is about was standing right by us, which is just *neat*.
...oh man. I am just fall-down tired right now, and it was SO WORTH IT.
