Behind the cut are my VERY VERY SPOILERY thoughts on Victory of Eagles.

Okay. So, just to start with, I would like to note that I now have a huge crush on the Duke of Wellington. That's weird, right?

But man, Wellesley was just about my favorite thing in the book-- totally ruthless and pragmatic, and also sarcastic and awesome and perfectly willing to do whatever it took to win, even if that meant putting up with inconvenient creatures like Laurence and Temeraire and Jane. I sort of ship Wellesley/Jane now a little, even though I know he only loves her for her military prowess. (Jane! You were so awesome! You are going to be such a badass Admiral of the Air!)

Also: Wellesley and Perscitia need to be strategy BFFs *so bad*. Oh man. I can't wait until someone thinks to give Perscitia some formal education; she is totally going to be the 19th-century Rodney Mckay of dragons. No, she is. I swear it makes sense.

I loved that we finally got Temerare's POV in this book, and how that POV showed us so many things about dragons that would have been totally invisible to Laurence. All the dragon characters were really great, actually. I think Gentius and Minnow are my favorites, after Perscitia.

Iskierka is sort of awful, though. The trouble is, she doesn't actually respect Granby, even though she loves him. I don't think she respects anyone, really. This is going to be an issue, not least because Granby is giving himself liver damage.

Sigh. This book has a lot to squee about! Unfortunately, there is no squee for Laurence, because he was much too busy with his emo. Which, I mean, I understand why! I really do! But dude, I'm pretty sure Ianto Jones and Dean Winchester are *both* rolling their eyes at how emo you're being, so now that you're no longer trying to throw yourself on every available sword, maybe tone it down some? I don't think I understood, before now, how little Laurence trusts his own moral compass, and how much stock he still puts in what he think he *should* do instead of what he knows is really right. Even when he *does* what he knows is really right, he feels like a heel for doing it. Poor Laurence. Listen to your dragon! Or at least Tharkay!

Which reminds me: there is going to be quite a bit of Laurence/Tharkay, isn't there? And probably Laurence/Granby as well. Uh, actually probably every possible permutation of the four of them on the Allegiance is going to happen, of which I can only approve.

Other fic I crave: Jane/Wellesley like whoa, maybe something about Lady Hamilton spying (she wrote the letter about Edith that Jane gave Laurence, right?), Perscitia hiring tutors and intimidating the crap out of them, and possibly something about Hollin and his new lady friend.

Argh, Laurence! I think what you're saying about him not trusting his moral compass is right on.

And fic about Perscitia would be badass, indeed.

(Betty pointed me here, as I was just moaning about having finished the book and having no one to talk to about it)
