So, I was in my very first car accident last night.

It actually was nowhere near as bad as it could have been. I was driving home on 295 late last night, and some complete idiot had run out of gas and stopped in the right lane with no lights on. Since there were no streetlights and it was raining, I had just enough time to see him in front of me, go AAAHWHATTHEFUCK and hit the brakes, and breathe a sigh of relief that I didn't hit him.

Then I got rear-ended.

The *really* scary part was thinking I was going to be propelled into the car in front of me, but luckily that didn't happen. My car doesn't even seem to be damaged, really, and nobody was hurt, although the car that hit me is going to need a lot of work. A pair of cops showed up in, like, a minute flat-- I guess they were driving by and saw us-- and said the accident was the first guy's fault, which is nice.

My neck hurts today, but not as much as I was expecting. I'm glad it wasn't worse, but I *never* want something like that to happen again.

Yikes! I am so glad you and your car are okay. But that sounds terrifying.

First, I'm glad you're okay. Be sure to get your neck checked.

Second,

said the accident was the first guy's fault, which is nice.

Make sure you get a copy of the police report to back this up, because the guy-who-hit-you's insurance company will try to blame this on you, since you are the one who stopped short (even though you had good reason).

Well, I called the DC police, and they said they'll only file a report if someone goes to the hospital. And the person who does the rear-ending is almost always held responsible, insurance-wise, so i think I'm okay there.

Yikes. The whole being-hit-after-you-think-you-are-fine must be terrible. I looked up and saw the car that hit mine and had about a second to go "Oh shit, I hope I don't die. :( ", which was scary, but ... taking you off your guard like that. Your poor neck.

Car accidents always suck. Just the whole adrenaline/ohshit response part, even if nobody gets hurt and the damage is minimal. Hope the paperwork goes smoothly (there is always paperwork, even if it isn't your fault).
