linkspam, and so on
Oct. 23rd, 2009 11:20 pmUh, sorry I disappeared for like a month! New job has been fairly exhausting, what with the complete overhaul of my sleep schedule (I get up early like a grown-up now. It sucks!) and actually being really hard and draining the last couple of weeks. So, so things of interest:
This comic gave me the giggles. Triumphant synth music! David Bowie! The rescued Cedric Diggory, played by Michael J. Fox!
This blog is posting the work of a mid-century street photographer named Vivian Maier, whose work was discovered when a guy bought her negatives at an auction. She seems really talented, the sort of artist who worked for herself and never expected her work to be seen-- but now it is, and it's great. Lots of really good slice-of-life stuff, beautifully composed.
I have a mild obsession with old photos, actually. I bought a suitcase containing about 700 family snapshots at a yard sale a few years ago (most of them are scanned and posted here) and I'm always drawn to photos when I see them at flea markets and things. Victorian and Edwardian photography is really interesting, too-- I especially love autochromes, because the color is so unexpected and lovely.
In other news, have snapped up and read Unseen Academicals, the latest Discworld, and have many, many thinky thoughts. I enjoyed it tremendously, though I thought the pace was a little rushed, and if anyone else has read it I'd love to pick their brain.
Last but certainly not least: clothes. I got my first, pleasantly large paycheck from my new job, and feel that I have earned some unwise purchases. Should I get this skirt? Or this dress? Or something from my Etsy favorites?
