the weekend, at last
Jan. 11th, 2011 12:58 pmI had such a busy weekend, it's taken me until Tuesday to do the writeup. Yeah, that's it. Not procrastination or anything.
Friday I babysat from 3 to 10, which meant I had enough money to splurge a bit at DC Big Flea the next morning. In addition to some old photos and a pin, I got two dresses-- a purple and white print dress with a cool button collar that I think I'll get a lot of wear out of, and a blue-and-green leaf print fancy dress that, alas, is a touch too big in the shoulders. If anyone with bigger shoulders than me is a size 8-10 and interested, let me know, because you can have it for $20.
Saturday night was the Max Levine Ensemble's 10-year anniversary show, which meant listening to cool bands at the Black Cat, seeing a ton of awesome people, and getting my feet stomped on when I ventured too close to the stage. Also, the line to get in was the second-coldest I have ever been in my life. But it was still really fun.
Sunday I went thrifting with
ellen_fremedon, at the big thrift stores on University and in White Oak. I just got a couple of books-- I think I used up my clothes karma at Big Flea.
Sunday night
srevans came over and we watched a bunch of Fifth Doctor. Boy, I love Five.
Black Orchid was awesome from a costume nerd perspective, between the '20s clothes and the fancy dress. I love it when they make good use of the BBC costume closet. And it was interesting to watch the last "pure" historical the show ever did-- all subsequent Who set in the past has involved aliens mucking with history in some way. I was really amused at how the Doctor's method of clearing himself of murder charges was to show his accusers his time machine. I'm not sure that actually proves you didn't kill a guy, dude. For all they know, you are a time-traveling murderer! But apparently the TARDIS is so impressive it negates all criminal charges.
I was not super enamored of the random inclusion of a native South American with a lip plate (SO FAKE LOOKING), or the craaaazy mutilated older brother in the hidden room. But that ten-minute cricket scene at the beginning earned a lot of goodwill. I think I can almost follow the cricket scene in Murder Must Advertise now.
We also watched Enlightenment, which was also full of fun costuming. Tegan's Edwardian dress was lovely, and the party scene on the pirate ship had some great outfits. But this serial was totally pwned by Captain Rack, who was AWESOME. Best immortal extradimensional lady pirate captain EVER. Other highlights:
-the Black Guardian and the White Guardian have birds on their heads. wtf.
-Turlough's agonized cries for the Doctor while stuck in the ion chamber.
-Turlough jumping ship and being like "I REGRET THIS IMMEDIATELY"
-Tegan telling the creeper Eternal guy to shove it
-the lone black actor seeing his chance to chew some scenery, and seizing it with both hands and all the facial expressions he could muster
-the whole idea of the ship race in space is pretty inspired
-did I mention how awesome Captain Rack is? Because: SO AWESOME
