I need to spend another $10 to get free shipping on the new Temeraire book. (BTW, how did I not know there was a new Temeraire book until yesterday?) I would just go buy the book in person, but now that the Borders in Silver Spring is gone there are not actually any non-used bookstores convenient to me. So I'm buying it online, and I want my damn free shipping. What should I get to round out my purchase? Books with pretty pictures of clothes are highly relevant to my interests, as are most SF and YA.

I always rec Where The Mountain Meets The Moon by Grace Lin, to get that out of the way. Beautiful fairytale with fairytales inside, and illustrations.

For SF... Damn, all I can think is The Time Machine and it's free now. I used to read so much SF! I'm reading Phule's Company by Robert Asprin, which is about a businessman taking over a reject group in the Space Legion, but while I enjoy it, I'm not sure about uts inherent quality.

I have failed.

My sci fi love of the year is The Carpet Makers by Andreas Eschbach. It's got a very fantasy-ish tone to it while still remaining sci fi, and is generally just mind-blowingly original- possibly this is because the German sci fi tradition is very different (it's translated), or possibly it's just that Mr. Eschbach is freakin' amazing, I don't know. But highly recommended.
