I worked at the shop today. Around noon, four eleven-year-old girls came in, and immediately starting calling dibs on various items of clothing. "We don't have any money," one of them told me, "but if we did, that's what we'd buy."
I said that was okay, and they could try stuff on as long as they handled it carefully and put it back where they found it. "And you can come back with your parents, if you want. This is a good place to get stuff for Halloween."
"Oh, I'm going to be a Weeping Angel for Halloween," one of them said.
All four of them turned out to be rabid Doctor Who fans, and were very excited when I told them we have a blue pinstripe suit in with the men's clothes that's perfect for the Tenth Doctor. We chatted about their favorite companion (Martha), their favorite Doctor (split vote between Ten and Eleven), and their favorite episodes (opinions varied). I told them they should check out some of the Classic Who that's on Netflix, especially anything with Romana. "She's a Time Lady who traveled with the Doctor," I explained.
Their response: "The Doctor traveled with a Time Lady? AWESOME."
They're also big Harry Potter fans, obviously. And Merlin, for some reason. One of them said her parents are going to let her watch Buffy soon.
It was really kind of lovely to see wee fangirls traveling in a pack-- when I was that age, I was a fandom of one, with no idea that being obsessive about fiction was something I could share. In a couple of years they'll probably have Tumblrs and write terrible, terrible fanfic. And a couple of years after that, they'll most likely be people I'll be willing to share a fandom with.
They said they'd come back next Friday, so we'll see if they turn up. I'm kind of looking forward to it.
