So this weekend was Capclave, and it was *delightful*.

I've been to Dragoncon five times, but the only smaller con I'd been to before this was con.txt earlier this year. I was definitely nervous before I got there-- I didn't know a soul at the con (although I did have Internet introductions to a couple of friends-of-friends), and I suspected it was going to be a much older crowd than con.txt had been.

But it turned out to be fantastic. Everyone was incredibly nice, the guests and panelists were really friendly and accessible, I had a million great conversations and got a ton of good advice. (Apparently, I need to age down the protagonist in the middle-grade novel I'm working on, because 14 is the Untouchable Age in YA and middle-grade.)

I got press-ganged into sitting on the costume and clothing panel, which was actually awesome, because I am willing to talk about clothes for loooooong periods of time. Which I proceeded to do. And now I kind of want to sit on more panels.

Possibly the best part was meeting other writers at a similar stage in their careers-- people who'd published a few shorts or had a novel they were querying, who were trying to get better at their craft and get their name out there. That also meant that there was a decent contingent of people around my age, which was lovely-- not that the older people there weren't great, but it's nice to have peers.

So the whole thing really got me excited about writing again. Towards that end, I have signed up the middle-grade novel for NaNo, which will be my first time attempting it-- normally I am too scared to try Yuletide and NaNo at the same time, but this year I think I'm going to go for it. Assuming I can figure out what to request for Yuletide.

Oh, yeah, I should probably mention-- I have no clue what to request for Yuletide. None. Zip. Nada. It's kind of a problem. I'm much more excited to write a story than receive one this year, so I'm kind of blanking on what to ask for. I guess I could just repeat some unfilled requests from previous years, but that seems kind of boring. IDK. Hopefully I will come up with something soon.

Hm. Your comments at con.txt re: Steve Rogers & airplane movies make me think that you would enjoy stories about Jack Baker from [personal profile] copperbadge's The Dead Isle very much. (And yes, the Dead Isle is definitely a Yuletide fandom this year!) There are also RPF categories related to early-Steve-Rogers period of history, as well as plain wacky awesome ones like 'Solar System (Anthropomorfic)'.

It was lovely to meet you! (I'm Victoria.) You should totally do more panels.
