So, having seen Avengers, um, four times (DON'T JUDGE ME) I am starting to be able to pick it apart a little more. And one thing I realized was that the first interrogation scene with Natasha is basically Joss's favorite trope in the entire universe. It's the opening scene of Buffy, it's the entire *concept* of Buffy-- it's the woman who looks like she's about to be a victim, and who secretly had the power all along.

I don't *mind*, or anything, this mostly makes me want to pat Joss on the head and coo, because it's a pretty good trope and it is so obviously his favorite, and he makes good use of it again in the Loki interrogation. But he really does use it every time.

Unrelatedly, Steve's face when he finds the Hydra weapons makes me want to cry a little. And his "guys with none of that worth ten of you" line to Tony is so obviously about Bucky that, again, tears. STEVE BABY. I want him and Natasha to find the Winter Soldier so BAD.

Yeah, I know! And when I saw it, with your first look at Black Widow's face is as it's being slapped, I was all, oh, Joss. Because you knew what was coming. And it was nicely Jossianly satisfying when it did happen, but...

And I've been thinking about that a lot, actually, how in Dollhouse, Joss hoped to introduce the trope to subvert it, but in many ways glorified it instead. And I thought, this is a classic scene, the bound woman being slapped, and I know Joss intends to subvert it, but if there's not an immediate payoff where the person viewing it who enjoyed it feels embarrassed for enjoying it, then it hasn't achieved its goal. It just appeased two viewpoints.
